Jaguars QB job Chad Henne's to lose

Or Blake Bortles, for that matter.

Coach Doug Marrone opened up the team's quarterback job after Bortles' latest inconsistent performance Thursday night, giving Chad Henne a chance to start. I'm just going to see how the practices go.

How things even got to this point for Bortles is nearly beyond comprehension, considering the talent surrounding him in tight end Marcedes Lewis, up-and-coming wide receivers in Allen Robinson, Marquise Lee, Allen Hurns and a formidable three-headed backfield composed of Chris Ivory, T.J. Yeldon and rookie Leonard Fournette.

Regardless, the Jaguars are hoping demoting Bortles prompts him to play better.

If Bortles is not the starter, it nearly behooves the Jaguars to cut bait and start anew without him, and the team has not shown fear in making big and surprising QB decisions at the end of the preseason. Even Marrone and the team's top decision-maker, Tom Coughlin, backed Bortles all season. Marrone confirmed it after the game.

"I am excited because it will be an opportunity to see (Newton) out there with all the different players we brought in, all the different playmakers that we believe we have", Rivera said. I try to look at it to see which guy is going to go out there and take it. "It's going to be important for whoever is in there (at quarterback) they understand that, lead and do the best they can with their reps". The Jaguars picked up Bortles' fifth-year option in May, but it's only guaranteed for injury, which means the only way Jacksonville would have to pay up before moving on is if he failed to pass a physical next year.

This would make general manager Dave Caldwell happy, as he still believes in Bortles, the third overall pick in 2014. Marrone said Bortles' "arm looked exhausted".

Is it a breakdown of mechanics, release point, weight shift and transfer, or simply a lack of confidence that is the issue with Bortles? "But if they're cheering or booing, it's kind of irrelevant, at least for me it is". They spent big money in free agency for defensive lineman Calais Campbell and cornerback A.J. Bouye, who have given management no reason to doubt the investment so far. "They're booing because you didn't do your job". Henne's first pass should have been caught for a touchdown but rookie receiver Keelan Cole dropped the pass. Henne also fit another pass into a tight window in the end zone to Robinson but he couldn't hold onto the ball, either. Henne followed and wasn't a lot better, connecting on 6-of-10 for 44 yards.

"A lot of times, I don't like to make quick decisions", Marrone said.

Jameis Winston continued his solid preseason, completing 21 of 29 passes for 196 yards for Tampa Bay.

The Buccaneers scored on their first three possessions, getting a short touchdown run from Doug Martin and two field goals from Nick Folk.

The Jaguars' Week 1 starting quarterback is now with a team ... and probably on the Jaguars. "But we have extremely high standards for him as he does for himself".
