Mariners ace James Paxton placed on DL, out until September

Paxton hurt himself in the seventh inning of his start on Thursday.

Things went from bad to worse Thursday night for the Mariners as they fell to the LA Angels 6 to 3. According to MLB.com's Greg Johns, Paxton grabbed at his upper left pectoral/shoulder area after a pitch in the seventh inning, which prompted the training staff to pay him a mound visit.

Paxton's injury leaves an already decimated Mariner starting rotation, with even more question marks. "It's different when it's in August and you're fighting for something here and you've really battled your butt off to get in this spot", Servais said. He was in a situation where we wanted to get him through the lineup twice. Cano moved to third on Ben Gamel's lineout to center, then scored on Dyson's flared base hit to left to make it 5-1. Nolasco struck out five and walked three on the afternoon. "After that, I saw the slide pop up and hit a double". He matched his career high with his 20th start Thursday and is nearing his career high of 121 innings, now standing at 119.2 innings.

But the Mariners got to reliever Bud Norris in the eighth. Just like that, the Mariners' 5-1 lead disappeared.

The game slipped away in the ninth inning when shortstop Jean Segura couldn't handle a short-hop grounder with one out and runners at first and second.

"He's the best player in the game".

"Sometimes you go through a little funk and you don't want to throw in the towel", Pujols said. "He put the team on his back".

Paxton said he was told a pectoral strain is an uncommon injury for pitchers, but that would only seem to add to his unique injury history. "Hopefully it's nothing big".

Paxton was in the midst of a breakout season. Paxton joins Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma and Drew Smyly on the disabled list.

Paxton was pulled in the middle of an at-bat to Kole Calhoun. He threw 64 pitches total, 41 for strikes. Marte took the roster spot of RHP Troy Scribner, who was optioned after Wednesday's game. Of the Mariners' four hits, only Espinosa's went for extra bases. Haniger could be sent out on a rehab assignment in the coming days. One of those wins was a shutout against the Mariners on July 1.

Albers has only 17 major league appearances and a 2-5 record with a 4.41 ERA.

From Rotoworld: Nolasco allowed five runs on nine hits over four innings while taking a no-decision in Sunday's loss to the A's.
