Marshawn Lynch sits during national anthem at Raiders preseason game

One of the hottest topics of discussion this past season in the National Football League was the protesting of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and thanks to Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch, that topic will be discussed even further as the regular season draws closer.

Although the start of the 2017 regular season is still several weeks away, new Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch is already creating headlines. Lynch is on a two-year, $9 million contract with the Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio was unaware of Lynch's intention to sit but said he spoke with the veteran rusher after the game.

"I talked to Marshawn to make sure we're on the same page", Del Rio said after a 20-10 loss to the Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium.

PFT tracked down a video of the national anthem before the November 13, 2011 Ravens-Seahawks game in Seattle, and that video clearly shows Lynch standing for the anthem. "It's not a form of anything other than me being myself, '" Del Rio said, via ESPN. You do your thing.

Lynch told Del Rio he has been sitting forever.

"I'd rather see him take a knee than stand up, put his hands up, and get murdered", Lynch said of Kaepernick.

Lynch rarely talks to the media but has voiced his support for quarterback Colin Kaepernick's 2016 season-long decision to kneel during the anthem to draw attention to what he saw as incidents of police brutality against people of color.
