Matic sale to Man Utd 'surprised' Lampard

Matic sale to Man Utd 'surprised' Lampard

The Serb, a key component in the Blues' two Premier League title triumphs in the past three seasons, joined United in a surprise £40 million move last month.

"He did well as Chelsea won the league a year ago, but he didn't go back to the level of 2014/15 and Cesc Fabregas was playing a lot more in the second half of last season".

Chelsea won the Premier League title last term in Conte's first campaign in charge but they did not have the distraction of European football.

"United were crying out for a central midfielder with the qualities of Nemanja Matic".

"This doesn't seem quite the same, but at the same time we don't know whether Matic wanted to leave".

As for Valencia, who captained United in Michael Carrick's absence against Real, the incredible physical strength of Lukaku, combined with a good level of footballing intelligence, should give the 24-year-old the platform to have a good season.

"Matic has intelligence and experience of the Premier League".

Costa's rollercoaster Chelsea career is ending in acrimonious fashion, but Lampard thinks now is the right time for player and club to part ways. Bakayoko has not and I saw him in the Champions League previous year.

"It amazes me, why would you sell Matic to Manchester United?".

"I think the [Matic] sale at this moment in time, with that Chelsea squad, could cost them the league".

"They are getting rid of players who are experienced and from who you know exactly what you're going to get".

"He seemed like he wanted to leave a year ago at times, although he was very influential and played very well", he said of Costa. He's a very select player who's a top, top striker, but when the position goes so far it's hard to put it back. So I don't think he'll be a huge loss to them.

"Once he gets into that, and comfortable with the surroundings - and the magnitude of what's expected of him - he'll be a good signing".

"I came from a similar position when I went from Aston Villa to United and people will always cast doubt over whether you have the quality, but this guy has got it all".
