More possibly tainted eggs found in Britain

About 700,000 of the eggs were distributed to the United Kingdom, with The Telegraph reporting that the British food safety watchdog had confirmed eggs may have already been eaten by consumers.

Fipronil itself is not an illegal product, but it is prohibited from being used as a pesticide.

Recall millions of eggs recalled from stores and warehouses in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium after they were discovered by toxic insecticides.

Dutch police have arrested two suspects after a scare over use of the insecticide fiproni, according to the Dutch prosecution service.

A Morrisons spokeswoman yesterday confirmed 100% of their whole eggs were British and none of these eggs had been affected but that at least three of their products containing egg (sandwiches) had been pulled from United Kingdom stores.

While some products that used Dutch eggs have since been withdrawn from supermarket shelves in Britain, the FSA confessed that numerous items which included the toxic pesticide will now have been consumed.

The substance can damage people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands if eaten in large quantities.

A batch of 196,000 contaminated Belgian eggs was put on sale between April and May and consumed "without any observed health impact", the French agriculture ministry said.

Two non-EU countries, Switzerland and Hong Kong, have also received contaminated products originating from affected poultry farms in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and France that have been treated with fipronil.

The European Commission announced yesterday that it had called for a meeting of ministers and national agencies responsible for regulation and food safety to discuss the impact of the egg contamination scare.

The decision to withdraw the products was not due to food safety concerns but based on the fact that the pesticide is not authorised for use in food-producing animals. However, Britain imports annually nearly 2 billion eggs, the the Agency.

"Based on the available evidence there is no need for people to change the way they consume or cook eggs".

It is believed that Fipronil got into the food chain when it was illegally added to a product used to treat poultry for lice and ticks.
