NASA seeks Planetary Protection Officer

NASA seeks Planetary Protection Officer

Despite sounding like something the Men In Black should be responsible for the role has instead been described as a sort of like a zookeeper for the solar system.

The job comes with a cushy six-figure salary and "secret" security clearance. So, naturally, people were excited over the moon and there's no pun intended.

- There's a job opening at NASA and and it sounds like a job for guardians of the galaxy. Well, NASA is looking for a Planetary Protection Officer (PPO). Yes, alien organisms or contamination, to some extent alien life, but nothing as potshots like that of "Independence Day".

According to a job post on the US government's official site, the position involves preventing astronauts and robots from getting contaminated with any organic and biological material during space exploration.

The position isn't just about protecting the Earth from contaminants from other planets, though. The contracts last for three years, and Conley is leaving for another post at the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance.

The U.S. space agency is looking for someone to defend Earth from aliens and vice verse. "This policy is based on federal requirements and worldwide treaties and agreements".

"I am responsible for ensuring that the United States complies with Article IX of The Outer Space Treaty", she said in a NASA interview.

Okay, so NASA's new PPO won't be rubbing shoulders with tentacled, sentient aliens, but they will be working to keep our world free of potential alien contaminants and microbes.

If you've got professional aspirations that reach into the stars and meet the unique qualifications for this out-of-this-world position, it certainly wouldn't hurt to apply.
