Italian rescue workers have freed the last of three children trapped under rubble after a deadly natural disaster on the Italian holiday island of Ischia off the coast of Naples.

Ischia is often hit by earthquakes, with its worst dating back to July 1883, when an estimated 5.8-magnitude quake killed more than 2,000 people.

The boys' parents had managed to escape from the building earlier, and proceeded to raise the alarm about their children.

"It was either destiny or the Holy Spirit, but something saved them", Luca Cari, a spokesman for the fire service, said.

When the quake struck just before 9 p.m. Monday, the boys' father, Alessandro Toscano, said he was in the kitchen while his wife, Alessia, was in the bathroom and his two older sons in their bedroom.

Sky TG24 said that the two boys were given bottles of water early Tuesday and were responding to rescuers.

"We are in touch with both of the boys".

The quake struck just two days shy of the one-year anniversary of a powerful 6.2-magnitude natural disaster that devastated several towns in central Italy, killing more than 250. Three children were trapped under a building that had collapsed in La Rita, a small village near Casamicciola.

It struck at the height of the summer season, when the island's population swells to take in more than its 64,000 registered residents. On Tuesday, streets were clogged, with tourists' cars queuing to board ferries taking them home.

The extent of the damage for a relatively light quake raised questions about the quality of construction on the island in the seismically active area off Naples and the active volcano, and the prevalence of illegally built structures.

Bruno Frattasi, the head of Italy's firefighters, told reporters Tuesday that the victim, who appeared to be a woman, had not yet been extracted from under the rubble. "We warned about the risk of collapses also in the case of not particularly serious temblors", De Chiara said.

"It's frankly extraordinary that people continue to die for earthquakes of this size", he said.

The quake came just two days shy of the one-year anniversary of a powerful 6.2-magnitude natural disaster that devastated several towns in central Italy. The quake on August 24, 2016 killed more than 250 people in Amatrice and beyond and set off a months-long series of powerful aftershocks that emptied many towns and hamlets of their people.
