Pence: Need More, Not Less Monuments

Pence: Need More, Not Less Monuments

Mr. Trump declined to give details on the new strategy and has said in the past he wouldn't give exact details on military tactics.

His comments came hours after President Donald Trump hit out at Pakistan for providing safe havens to "agents of chaos" that kill Americans in Afghanistan and warned Islamabad that it has "much to lose" by harbouring terrorists.

But Pence argued removal of statues should be a "local decision", adding, however, "It's important that we remember our past and build on the progress that we have made".

"What the president has decided is to deploy a sufficient number of troops at the brigade level in Afghanistan to assist the Afghans who are in the lead", Pence told the Today Show.

"We're there to help the Afghans win", Pence said, "and the president made a commitment that we're going to be there until we win". He also wouldn't identify benchmarks for success and specify if more American troops will be brought in to supplement the 8,400 now there.

"Pakistan has much to gain from partnering with our effort in Afghanistan", Trump said. "They need to step up as a partner", the vice president said.

Statues honoring prominent Civil War generals and other figures have become a flashpoint across the country in light of the white supremacist rally and ensuing violence in Charlottesville, Va.

"We understand that criticism comes with this job, and this president has the broad shoulders to be able to take it", Pence said.

Pence said President's strategy for South Asia involves a stronger strategic partnership with India - the world's largest democracy and a key security and economic partner.

Trump also said there were "some fine people" among both the white nationalists and the left-wing counter protesters.
