Police investigate 2 more shooting deaths in Charlotte

The board heard about eight hours of testimony behind closed doors Tuesday about the shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott in September 2016.

Board members left the session without commenting.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) A split review board announced Thursday that it won't challenge a police department's finding that its officer was justified in shooting a black man past year in North Carolina's largest city.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they were called to the Meadowbrook apartments in the 2300 block of Ginger Lane around 1:56 a.m. But the review board announced in June that it found a potential error in the department's decision. The board hasn't publicly identified the error.

The board has 11 members, but one seat is vacant and two members were unable to attend the hearing because of work commitments, said Cary Davis, the board's attorney.

Scott was confronted by police that day because an undercover officer spotted him holding the gun in his auto and rolling a joint of marijuana, the DA's report said. She stood next to a man whose sign read "Justice for Keith Lamont Scott".

A review board is set to take a second look at how a North Carolina police department handled the shooting of a black man by an officer previous year. The board had scheduled the hearing to take two days. Scott's shooting last September provoked days of civil unrest.

A short time later, police said they found a gray auto connected to the shooting on Rupert Lane, less than two miles from the scene. The district attorney said separately that no charges would be filed against the black officer.
