Public Libraries Giving Away Solar Eclipse Glasses

Public Libraries Giving Away Solar Eclipse Glasses

In a 70-mile wide band from central OR through SC, a total eclipse of the sun will be visible across the entire continental United States for the first time in nearly 40 years.

This will be the first total eclipse seen in the contiguous US since 1970 and the first total eclipse to be seen from coast to coast since 1917.

Our eyes are too sensitive and fragile for us to stare at the sun safely - eclipse or not.

And the eclipse will end at 3:50pm, when the moon leaves the sun's edge.

However, a majority of the sun will be covered no matter where you live across the state on Monday, Aug. 21.

Check listings for additional air-times.

Through his research, Frank Nelson with the Louisville Astronomical Society, has found that the last total solar eclipse that was visible in Kentucky occurred in 1869.

People in fourteen states will be able to see the solar eclipse in totality next week. In fact, there is a massive difference even between a 99% partial eclipse to a 100% total eclipse.

"During a regular eclipse, if you stay in one place, you can only see the corona for 1 or 2 minutes", Uitenbroeck said, "Putting telescopes at different places allows us to build up a time series where we can see how the corona changes".

In less than a fortnight, the moon is going to totally cover the sun. The protective gear you use should be verified by an accredited testing laboratory and must have the ISO 12312-2 certification, NASA says.

Both must be compliant with the ISO 12312-2 worldwide safety standard.

The Mayborn Science Theater at Central Texas College will have a showing of their new show, "Totality", about the wonders of eclipses, especially total solar eclipses, at 11:30 a.m. August 21. If the solar filter shows any signs of damage, they are not safe to use.

There has been a lot of talk already leading up to the eclipse but here are some numbers about the eclipse you may not know. With these shades, you can view the eclipse before, during, and after totality without any problems.

The alerts come days before the solar eclipse, and as others said they have been duped by fake glasses.

"I have glasses that have been provided to the library we can pass out for people to use".

You should never look at an eclipse with the naked eye, but there are plenty of other unsafe methods to avoid, as well. A solar eclipse produces ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation from the sun which could burn the retina and lead to blindness.
