Ravens say Joe Flacco will be ready for Week 1

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco will not play in the preseason but is expected to start the regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 10, the team announced Friday.

While the Ravens would always like to have Flacco on the field to build chemistry with the rest of the offense, they don't want to risk Flacco aggravating his injury in a preseason game.

The team said his "progress from a back issue is good". "The plan is for Flacco to be the starting quarterback against Cincinnati in the regular season opener on September 10", the statement read. Lewis will have surgery next week and will miss the 2017 season.

Baltimore has been without Flacco for the entire training camp after he notified the team of his back injury on July 26, when the full team reported.

Filling in for the injured quarterback has been Ryan Mallett, who started the Ravens preseason opener against the Washington Redskins on Thursday.

Flacco has only missed six games during his National Football League tenure, while his 122 regular-season game streak came to a halt in 2015 once he tore two ligaments in his knee. He's played in all 16 games in eight of his nine seasons.
