Rogers Cup 2017: Shapovalov's run comes to an end against Zverev

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal lost his round of 16 match in the Rogers Cup on Thursday to Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Haase will face the victor between second-seeded Roger Federer and Roberto Bautista Agut in the semifinals on Saturday.

It was an even contest in the first set, Shapovalov and Zverev going toe-to-toe until the ninth game.

In a glimpse of the future, 20-year-old Zverev - a four-time victor on the ATP Tour this season - needed three match points to see off Shapovalov and earn a showdown with Roger Federer in a repeat of the Halle decider, which the latter won in straight sets.

Zverev's momentum carried over into the second set, where he quickly picked up the second break of the match, grabbing a quick 1-0 lead.

Federer has won all seven career matches and taken all 16 sets against the 29-year-old Bautista Agut. "But, as I have practiced with him quite a bit, maybe I am better prepared than if I would have never hit with him before". Federer was coming off a three-set win over another Spaniard, David Ferrer, against whom he is 17-0.

And in yet another moment when it would have been easy to wonder if the 18-year-old Shapovalov would finally break, he proved he was only still bending, coming up with his first break of the match and then holding serve to claim a 2-1 advantage, looking all the more confident doing so.

Haase, who upset seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the third round, reached his first career Masters Series semifinal. But while Ferrer managed to take the opening set - ending Federer's 32-set streak - the Swiss ace raised his game to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Haase, ranked 52nd in the world, fought back to beat Argentina's Diego Schwartzman 4-6 6-3 6-3.

"Now that Rafa is out I know I can make big strides, especially if I was to go further than the semis here", Federer said. "It's tough to come back and play that same level".
