Sally Pearson Wins Gold At The World Championships

Australian hurdling great Sally Pearson's impressive comeback from two years of injury hell continued on Friday as she posted the fastest time in reaching 100 metres hurdles world final.

Harrison set the world record of 12.20 at the London Stadium past year, but only after missing out on the United States team for Rio, and suffered more disappointment here as she clipped hurdle after hurdle to come home fourth in 12.74.

The American recovered well enough to claim the last available qualifying berth in 12.86, sneaking through by one hundredth of a second.

Competing at her first major global championship since 2013 and having overcome serious wrist, hamstring and achilles injuries, Pearson powered away from the field on Saturday to win in 12.59 seconds.

Dawn Harper Nelson, who won gold at the 2008 Olympics and was one of four Americans in the final, took silver in 12.63 ahead of Germany's Pamela Dutkiewicz (12.72).

Reginging world champ Danielle Williams from Jamaica was eliminated in the semis, as was Australian Michelle Jenneke, who clocked 13.25.

"From the first day I started training (in August 2016) I knew it was possible, I knew I could get here", she said.

"I don't know if it was surprise or what, but the emotion just escaped my body because I was so excited and so happy to have achieved what I have worked so hard for", Pearson said.

She added: "This is just so incredible, to be a world champion again".

"I love this stadium, I love the people and I'm so happy to have been back here doing the same thing again (winning gold)".

Meanwhile, local favourite Mo Farah had to settle for a silver medal as he was beaten to 5000 metres gold by Muktar Edris in his final major championship race. "There were so many big names in the field and since I was a girl I have been admiring Sally Pearson".
