South Korea, Japan warn N.Korea on Guam missile attack

North Korean military figures are putting the final touches on a plan to fire four missiles into the waters around the U.S. territory of Guam, to be presented to leader Kim Jong Un within days.

The same report gave unusually specific details of North Korea's plan to launch four Hwasong-12 intermediate-range missiles on a flight of 18 minutes across Japanese skies to land in waters surrounding Guam, about 30km to 40km away from land.

North Korea's military said on Thursday it was considering firing four intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs) around Guam, home to several U.S. military bases, according to an article in English by the regime's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), as cited by South Korean news agency Yonhap. It would be up to Kim whether the move is actually carried out.

"Let's see what he does with Guam".

A report that the North had "miniaturized" its warheads caused a public furor, but many experts already believed the North has a compact weapons design.

Instead, it has been testing missiles at an unprecedented pace and threatening to launch some of those toward Guam.

A willingness to shoot down the missile was a politically important move in the relationship between the two allies, Mr Gatling said, adding that Japan might be better placed to provide data to help the USA track the missile. The island is home to 160,000 residents.

USA officials also think it's just a matter of time before Kim's program fully matures.

The Defense Department owns about one-quarter of Guam's 212 square miles.

The island houses about 7,000 USA troops spread between Andersen Air Force base and Naval Base Guam.

"Though it is impossible to rule out a possibility of a conflict by misunderstandings, I think both nations know what their limits are because they have been dealing with each other since 1953, when the Korean War ended with a truce". And if his missiles prove no match for US interceptors, Kim Jong Un might be chastened into thinking twice before conducting any more. No doubt, the country's nuclear missile development has progressed at a faster pace than anticipated by the USA government.

Along with the US personnel on the island, there are about 7,100 of their family members as well as 6,700 civilian Defense Department workers and their dependents, according to Logan.

The U.S. took control of Guam in 1898, when Spanish authorities surrendered to the U.S. Navy. USA defense spending is the main economic driver of the island, making up about 40 percent of its gross domestic product, followed by tourism.

McCain, who heads the Armed Services Committee, made the comments Tuesday in an interview on KTAR News in Phoenix.

In a statement this week, Bordallo called North Korea's threat to target Guam "dangerous", saying she has discussed threats with Mattis and other defense leaders, who have "consistently reassured me that Guam is protected".

"We're very concerned about the news but we've been given assurance by the local government, primarily through Governor Eddie Calvo, that he is working with the military to ensure that the safety of all the residents are the utmost priority", Analista said.

More recently, North Korean missiles have landed in the Sea of Japan, with some falling in Japan's exclusive economic zone that stretches as much as 200 nautical miles from its shores.

However, he expressed some concern over the recent statements of some US politicians, singling out Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham. The rotations also came as North Korea increasingly upped the ante in the standoff over its development of nuclear weapons.

"On the North Korean side", he says, "there are differences of specificity".
