Trump again cites 'military' option against North Korea

Trump again cites 'military' option against North Korea

President Donald Trump's "war of words" with North Korea is not the right way to go about addressing the nuclear threat from Pyongyang, former ambassador Nancy Soderberg told CNBC on Friday.

Trump and Macron spoke over phone and discussed the need to confront the increasingly risky situation regarding North Korea's destabilising and escalatory behaviour, the White House said.

"The United States, with their allies, are ready to implement a full range of measures diplomatic, economic and military" to put an end to the nuclear threat of north korea, explained the White House in a press release.

Trump's call with Macron came hours after he talked with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a separate phone call. North Korea dominated the conversation between the two leaders, according to a readout of the call.

Trump's "fire and fury" remark on Tuesday followed reports that North Korea produced a nuclear weapon small enough to fit inside a missile.

The comments came after Trump unleashed a slew of fresh threats against North Korea on Friday, declaring the US military "locked and loaded".

Soderberg criticizes the president's lack of diplomacy and she personally wishes that the worldwide community increase pressure on North Korea rather than use outright force. Just as we reach the 72nd anniversary of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Trump is making thinly veiled threats to again use USA nuclear weapons if North Korea continues the same behavior.

In response, Japan began on Saturday to deploy its missile defense system Patriot, after threats from Pyongyang.

Asked Friday if the US was going to war, he said cryptically, "I think you know the answer to that".

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un responded by threatening, if attacked, to strike targets in or around Guam in the western Pacific.

"We just didn't do it in public", she said.
