U.S. baby found clinging to dead mother in Hurricane Harvey floodwater

U.S. baby found clinging to dead mother in Hurricane Harvey floodwater

Her vehicle had stalled in floodwaters and when she grabbed her daughter and got out of the auto, floodwater swept them away.

But unlike some others who have been able to flee from the state's devastating floodwaters, police said the mother and daughter, who have not been publicly identified, were swept into a canal. "The mother did the best she could to keep her child up over the water".

The child was holding onto the floating woman when a police and fire-rescue team in a boat caught up to them a half-mile downstream, he said.

First responders in Beaumont, TX, spotted the woman floating with her child on Tuesday afternoon about a half mile from her auto, which got stuck in high water on a service road, police said.

Police said they plucked the pair from the water moments before they slipped under a floating railroad trestle.

She got out of the vehicle with her child, then at some point, they were swept into a canal, floating almost one-half mile from the vehicle.

Riley said the woman "absolutely saved the child's life".

'They were in the water for quite some time.

'The baby also had a backpack that was helping her float on her back and she was holding on to her mom, ' she added. "The child was responsive but suffering from hypothermia", they continued.

The child is in stable condition, where she will be released into the care of family members later today.

At least 18 people have been killed by Harvey since Friday, when it made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane.

Similar scenes have played out across Houston as high winds, heavy rains and floods brought by Harvey sweep across the southeastern part of the state: a moment of terror and a desperate attempt to try to reach safety.
