US, South Korea begin military drill as North reacts

South Korea's top military officer said Sunday that the current security situation on the peninsula was "more serious than at any other time" amid the North's growing nuclear and missile threats, and warned Pyongyang of merciless retaliation against any attack. The U.S. general is on the last stop of an Asia tour that took him to China and South Korea and has been dominated by talk of the North Korean threat.

President Donald Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon says there's no military solution to the North Korean threat. Trump was threatening "Fire and fury" on the reclusive Communist regime and in return as Kim said his regime was examining a plan to launch missiles on Guam. The South Korean military considers the visit an unusual act and is preparing to prevent a possible military provocation, Yonhap said.

There will be no field training during the exercise, according to U.S. Forces Korea.

The United States had been conducting regular "command and control" drills in the years following the 1950-53 Korean War, but combined exercises with the South Korean military following the failed raid, in which all but two of the North Korean commandos were killed.

The annual joint drills, which involve tens of thousands of US and South Korean troops, have been deemed a preparation for war by North Korea.

Warning of an "uncontrollable phase of a nuclear war" on the peninsula, it added: "If the United States is lost in a fantasy that war on the peninsula is at somebody else's doorstep, far away from them across the Pacific, it is far more mistaken than ever". The transcript was sent to The Associated Press on Thursday by North Korea's U.N. Mission.

South Korea's Kyunghyang Shinmun newspaper said in an August 11 editorial that the allies could gain a bargaining chip in efforts to persuade the North into meaningful nuclear talks by halting or scaling down the joint drills.

NORTH KOREA has warned Australia it has committed a "suicidal act" by pledging its allegiance to the United States and sending defence force members to join military exercises with American and South Korean forces.

In turn, Mr Kim has threatened to fire missiles towards the USA territory of Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

This time, while the USA has included fewer servicemen than a year ago and withheld any military assets which standout, it has also dispatched three senior military commanders to participate in the drill. "I believe China has strongly warned North Korea not to conduct another nuclear test", Moon said.

North Korea is a highly secretive nation and predictions of what it will do next are often little more than conjecture.

A small number of British and Australian troops have also been deployed to take part in computer-simulated exercises. So far the US and South Korea have rejected this idea. This year, 17,500 members of the US military and almost 50,000 servicemembers from the South Korean military are taking part.

Kim told Guterres the resolution "constitutes a flagrant infringement upon (North Korea's) sovereignty and an open challenge to it".
