USA government arrests "WannaCry" saviour

For example, he said the charges appear to treat the selling of malware as equivalent to the use of malware, and also treat software, in this case, the Kronos trojan, as a "device".

Hutchins is due in federal court in Milwaukee on Tuesday. Using a vulnerability in Microsoft's Windows operating system discovered by USA security agencies, WannaCry locked victims' computers and demanded a $300 ransom.

A computer law expert says the evidence behind the US arrest of a British cybersecurity researcher is problematic.

A US judge in Las Vegas set a $30,000 bail on Friday for a famed British cyber security researcher accused of advertising and selling malicious code used to pilfer banking and credit card information. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San Francisco-based digital rights group, said Friday it was "deeply concerned" about Hutchins' arrest and was attempting to help him "obtain good legal counsel". "This is a law enforcement matter and it would be inappropriate to comment further".

Mabbitt said he eventually found Hutchins' name on a detention centre website.

Hutchins lives with his family in the town of Ilfracombe, England, and worked out of his bedroom.

Janet Hutchins, his mother, told the Telegraph she was trying to find out exactly what had happened to her son but said she had not yet managed to get anything confirmed.

Marcus Hutchins, 23, gained worldwide celebrity status within the hacker community in May when he was credited with neutralizing the global "WannaCry" ransomware attack.

He then spent the next three days fighting the worm that crippled Britain's hospital network as well as factories, government agencies, banks and other businesses around the world. He was given a $10,000 reward for the effort, which he donated to charity. "Now I know there could be unknown circumstances, but this is a very delicate situation".

An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported Marcus Hutchins' age.

A man described as a hero for stopping one computer virus has been arrested on suspicion of creating another.

M - Marcus Hutchins, the 23-year-old British security researcher who was credited with stopping the WannaCry outbreak in its tracks by discovering a hidden "kill switch" for the malware, has been arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation over his alleged involvement in another malicious software targeting bank accounts, the Guardian reported.

Marcus Hutchins was detained in Las Vegas and has been accused of involvement with malware known as Kronos, which stole online banking details and credit card data in 2014 and 2015.
