Vokes at double as Burnley catch Chelsea cold

Vokes at double as Burnley catch Chelsea cold

Champions Chelsea were humbled and humiliated with an opening day 2-3 defeat at home to Burnley that owned so much to bad defending than it was to the consequences of having two men sent off.

Stephen Ward scored the second goal for Burnley on 39th minute of the first half to make it 2-0 for the visitors.

"Chelsea have players of such calibre and to see the game through is so pleasing".

Referee Craig Pawson, right on the spot, instantly brandished a red card.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte's bleak afternoon began in the 14th minute when new club captain Cahill was shown his first red card in five seasons. Andreas Christensen made his debut as a sub for debutant Jeremie Boga, and Burnley took advantage of an unfamiliar Chelsea back three.

Matt Lowton's right-wing cross found Vokes and he sent a bouncing volley into the far corner, with Thibaut Courtois unable to get across in time.

"Your first win of course is always important when you are written off like we are every year".

Antonio Conte must have had some words with his side at half-time because Chelsea emerged energised after the break.

Chelsea pulled one back midway through the second half as record summer signing Alvaro Morata came off the bench to head home but any sign of a comeback vanished when Cesc Fabregas was dismissed for a second booking in the 81st minute.

"He's brought on Morata and he's taken off Batshuayi". Alonso had a fierce free kick well saved by Tom Heaton just after the hour mark. Morata stooped to nod home a Christensen cross and then a typically determined run from David Luiz saw the Brazilian evade make it 3-2.

Conte will have some thinking to do, along with the board, as both Cahill and Fabregas will be missing for next week's match with Tottenham Hotspur.

Stamford Bridge is never an easy place to grab a result, but Sean Dyche's men are making it look effortless against a 10-man Blues squad after they had Gary Cahill sent to the showers early after a cynical challenge.

The first XI has hardly changed from the side which romped to the title last season and while Burnley performed well, Chelsea really should be expecting to beat teams of their calibre.
