Yankees put RHP Tanaka on DL with shoulder inflammation

The Yankees made the move Saturday before hosting the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox.

Girardi said that no tests had been performed on Tanaka's shoulder, but that team doctors had determined there was no structural damage. In a corresponding move, NY recalled right-hander Giovanny Gallegos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In the past week the Yanks have been forced to put CC Sabathia (right knee inflammation) and Tanaka on DL.

Having gone just four innings while issuing five free passes in his last start, it's clear that this issue has come up just recently for Tanaka. After the game, Tanaka told the team he was ailing.

"We decided he needs a break". Asked about it, Girardi said "you can run out of starters".

Tanaka's E.R.A. this season is the highest of his career by more than a run.

Tanaka won't throw for five days and said he then plans to resume his throwing program.

With an 8-10 record and 4.92 ERA on the year, our models project the 28-year-old for a 4-2 record and 4.13 ERA in 56-plus innings the rest of the way this season.

Tanaka's latest injury is not believed to be related to the partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow that he sustained in July 2014. He added that he's frustrated to miss time but doesn't expect to be out long. Tanaka won't throw at all over the next five days and will miss a couple starts while he rests his exhausted pitching arm, putting him in line to return sometime when the Yankees face the Tigers between August 22 and August 24.
