Alliance 2022: Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi aims for electrification, autonomous driving

Speaking of technology, 40 vehicles will be introduced with different levels of autonomous driving capability.

The French-Japanese alliance, which now also includes Mitsubishi, is further hoping to double synergy savings from pooling resources in the alliance to about 10 billion euros ($12 billion) within six years, Ghosn said.

The companies announced Friday that, together, they would launch 12 new all-electric vehicles by 2022. This year, Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors alliance became the world's largest automotive group by sales volume.

The Renault-Nissan alliance is ramping up electric vehicle production, vowing 12 new models by 2022 and to make electric cars 30 percent of its overall production.

The companies also launched a new logo and online presence for the Alliance, symbolizing the growing convergence and cooperation between the member companies. Compared to the other goals in the "Alliance 2022" strategy, deploying a fully autonomous auto by 2022, one without a human driver being necessary, seems a bit overly ambitious. "To achieve this target, on one side Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors will accelerate collaboration on common platforms, powertrains and next-generation electric, autonomous and connected technologies", he said. We intend to deliver on growing synergies, with three autonomous companies cooperating with the efficiency of one.

The 14 million units at horizon 2022 are expected to represent a combined turnover of 240 billion dollars (201 billion euros), has exposed Mr. Ghosn.

Carlos Ghosn has always been careful to say that the success of the Renault-Nissan alliance should be measured in synergies among the partners, not sales growth.

The announcements are part of an overall strategic plan released Friday for the next five years, its first such plan since it took over Mitsubishi last year. In the first half of 2017, their volumes increased by 7 per cent year-on-year to 5.27 million units, while sales of electric vehicles crossed a total of over 5 lakh units. It aims to exceed combined sales of 14 million units, up almost 40 percent by the end of the plan.

In order to achieve the targets, the main strategy will be for the three companies to use four common platforms - the basic structure of a vehicle.

Ghosn pledged to increase that figure to more than 9 million alliance vehicles on four common platforms.

On the topic of electric vehicles, a new family of electric motors and batteries will be introduced in 2020.

Nissan said its EVs would boast more than 600km of range by 2022, based on NEDC homologation methodology.
