Dabhoi prepares to receive PM Modi ahead of Sardar Sarovar Dam inauguration

Here are six facts about the Sardar Sarovar Dam that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate on his 67th birthday on September 17th Sunday. "When the UPA was in power at the Centre government did not give permission for seven years to install gates on the dam".

Explaining the characteristics of the Sardar Sarovar project, a Sardar Sarovar Dam official said that it is the biggest dam in terms of volume of concrete used in it.

The height of the dam was recently raised to over 138 meters increasing its usable storage capacity to over 4.7 million acre feet.

She said water released for Sardar Sarovar dam has submerged many areas. The official said the 1.2-kmlong dam which is 163 metres deep has till date produced 4,141 crore units of electricity from its two power houses - river bed powerhouse and canal head powerhouse.

Four states - Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh - will benefit from the project.

57 per cent of the electricity produced from the dam goes to Maharashtra, while Madhya Pradesh gets 27 per cent and 16 per cent goes to Gujarat. The protesters alleged that on Wednesday night in Nisarpur village of Barwani, the shivling of a Shiva temple at the banks Narmada tributary Uri-Baghni, was uprooted by force despite the opposition of the people of Narmada valley.

"The Congress had prepared a work schedule in such a way that the entire dam construction and canal network would have been completed by 2000". Nearly 56 years after the foundation stone for the dam was laid by the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru, it will be inaugurated on September 17. In 1996, the construction work was suspended following a stay by the Supreme Court.

Earlier, the height of the dam was 121.92 metres. "Planning is being done for the massacre of thousands of families so as to celebrate Modi's birthday with great pomp and show", said Patkar.

After inaugurating the dam, PM Modi will travel to Sadhu Bet, where the Statue of Unity, an iconic statue and associated memorial complex for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, is now under construction. "After Modiji became Prime Minister, the go-ahead was given within a few days", Gujarat chief minister Rupani said.
