Google hit with lawsuit over gender pay

A lawyer representing three female former Google employees is seeking class action status, it was announced on Thursday.

Scigliano said that if discrepancies or problems are noticed during a review process, Google's team strives to fix them to ensure that everyone is treated fairly.

"Class action is the principal vehicle through which discrimination violations can be remedied", Gould says. It follows a federal investigation that made a preliminary finding of alleged "extreme" pay discrimination against women at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California.

The complaint [PDF] - filed in San Francisco, California, by law firms Altshuler Berzon, LLP and Lieff, Cabraser, Heimann & Bernstein, LLP - alleges that Google systematically pays women less than men, channels women in lower-paying job tracks, and considers women for promotion less frequently than men.

Google pushed back against the allegations. He says Thursday's suit also may help air evidence from the government investigation that would not otherwise be public.

In a statement emailed to The Register, Google senior manager of corporate communications Gina Scigliano said the company disagrees with the central allegations of the lawsuit.

"Our analysis gives us confidence that there is no gender pay gap at Google". It alleges that women are paid less than similarly qualified men, are assigned to lower job classifications, and placed on career "ladders" with lower pay and less prestige than comparable men.

Ms Ellis, for example, was hired in 2010 at a level typically assigned to college graduates, although she had four years of experience, according to the lawsuit. Nearly all female software engineers, however, were frontend engineers.

Responding to the lawsuit, the USA technology giant denied any discriminatory policies.

The lawsuit comes on the heels of other allegations the company does not treat male and female employees equally, as the U.S. Department of Labor is investigating the company for gender discrimination in its hiring practices. "Google has said its own our analysis of its employees" compensation indicated it had no gender pay gap. "I'm just attacking the fact that we can't honestly discuss any of these issues, and that is actually hurting the problem", he said.

Ellis says she did not discuss her career-ladder placement during her four years at Google. Furthermore, the company added men with equivalent and less experience to Level 3. "About 50 percent of the employees she encountered with Sales Enablement jobs, however, were women".

Holly Pease and Kelli Wisuri, the other plaintiffs in the suit, tell similar stories in the complaint. He was put on the higher-paying Level 4, according to the complaint. He said Pease was not subject to an arbitration clause.

Additionally, they claim Google keeps women partitioned in compensation levels with lower ceilings and routinely thwart advancement opportunities for female employees by promoting fewer women and more slowly than males in the company. "Google has a deserved reputation as being one of the best places for women to work", she says.
