Hüsker Dü member Grant Hart loses battle with cancer

GRANT HART, drummer/vocalist/songwriter for the influential '80s TWIN CITIES hardcore band HÜSKER DÜ, succumbed to cancer at his home in ST. PAUL at the age of 56.

Husker Dü posted a caption-less photo of Grant Hart to its official Facebook page shortly after midnight on September 14. "I wanted to be a song writer because of Husker Du".

With a groundbreaking sound which folded melody, introspection and a bunch of external influences into an indie framework, Husker Du led the way for a plethora of bands from the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr to Nirvana and many more. He recalled how they met in the fall of 1978, at a almost empty St. Paul record store where Hart was clerking and the PA system was blaring punk rock. We made fantastic music together. When we fought about the details, it was because we both cared. It was an wonderful decade.

"The next nine years of my life was spent side-by-side with Grant", Mould wrote. "Everyone touched by his spirit will always remember".

He added, "Godspeed, Grant".

The New York Times reported of the band's 1980's era successes that Husker Due released "six albums in fewer than six years". Their 1984 set Zen Arcade is considered a stone cold classic. Their young manager, David Savoy, committed suicide and Mould took on many of his duties; the ensuing strain was exacerbated by Hart's heroin addiction and the built-up tension from spending five years in a van with the same people.
