Iran Says US 'Seeking Excuses' To Tear Up Nuclear Deal

Iran Says US 'Seeking Excuses' To Tear Up Nuclear Deal

"The administration seeks to bring a change in Iran's behavior", said a senior administration official who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Trump warned during his presidential campaign that he might cancel the deal negotiated by his predecessor, Barack Obama, but has so far agreed to renew the extension, which he last did on May 17.

The United States on Thursday extended some sanctions relief for Iran under the 2015 nuclear deal, the State Department said, but no decision has been made on whether to preserve the deal itself.

Trump has called provisions of the agreement "terrible" and informed members of his regime, including Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley, that he wants them to find Iran out of compliance with it when they present their 90-day report next month.

Iran is determined to use the post-JCPOA atmosphere and expand relations with European countries, especially Belgium, he added.

He cited Iranian support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, its development of ballistic missiles and "cyber activities".

In addition, Shamkani said that researchers in the military centers have been working on conventional weapons, particularly missiles, as part of Iran's inactive defense policy, hidden from foreigners, according to Mehr News Agency.

After the president grudgingly recertified the agreement in July, he commissioned a team whose sole goal consisted of unearthing Iranian violations so that Trump could justify reversing himself the deal in October - even though doing so would not, in and of itself, kill the deal.

Dr. Paul, a three-time American presidential candidate and the founder of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity, made the remarks in a recent interview after Trump accused Iran of violating "the spirit" of the worldwide nuclear deal. "In April he said that "[the Iranians] are not living up to the spirit of the agreement".

OFAC said it had designated Ukraine-based Khors Aircompany and Dart Airlines for aiding sanctioned Iranian and Iraqi airlines by providing aircraft and services.

Rex Tillerson, the US Secretary of State, will sit down at the same table with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Zarif for the first time on Wednesday at a meeting to review implementation of the 2015 nuclear agreement with Tehran. Those so-called secondary sanctions crippled Iran's economy, because they applied not only to Iran but also to any foreign entities that did business with it.

If Trump decides to decertify Iran, Congress will have 60 days to determine whether to reimpose nuclear-related sanctions and effectively renege on US promises under the deal. He hasn't, yet, but he has taken steps to change foreign policy towards the Islamic Republic.

However, the State Department maintained cautious rhetoric regarding the future of the deal.

On Thursday and in previous comments, Trump has said he is inclined not to certify Iranian compliance after having twice found it compliant at earlier deadlines.
