'Wait for affidavit to know government's stand on Rohingyas'

'Wait for affidavit to know government's stand on Rohingyas'

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the government will inform the Supreme Court of its stand on the Rohingya immigrants on September 18.

After Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati urged the Centre to adopt a humanitarian approach towards thousands of Rohingya families seeking asylum in India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday said that the Government of India can not allow a security situation of the country to suffer for the sake of allowing illegal immigrants on regional and religious consideration. The flight of almost 3,00,000 Rohingya to neighbouring Bangladesh is a testimony to the wretchedness of their condition.

The government, she said, should also hold talks with governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh to resolve the problems of Rohingya Muslims. "Rohingya Muslims are threat to National Security", government told Supreme Court today, reported CNN News 18.

"It is found that continuity of Rohingya immigration and their continued stay in India, apart from being absolutely illegal, has serious national security ramifications and it will have a very serious adverse impact on the fundamental rights of Indian citizens to share the natural resources of the country", the affidavit states. "It undermines India's security", Rijiju said in a tweet on Wednesday.

The thousands of Rohingyas living in Jammu have previously faced the threats of being thrown out by some groups, such as The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party and the traders of Jammu Chamber, before the government made a decision to deport them.

Erdoğan, Kofi Annan discuss Rohingya Muslims over phone

Former RSS ideologue and Rashtriya Swabhiman Andolan leader K N Govindacharaya has recently moved the apex court seeking to make him a party in the case filed by the two Rohingya Muslims.

His remarks came after India had taken strong exception to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein's criticism of India for wanting to deport Rohingya refugees. Whether or not India chooses to ratify the 1951 convention, there are several Supreme Court verdicts which disallow the Indian government from arbitrarily and summarily deporting refugees from its territory.

In response to Bangladesh's request for help, he said an aircraft chartered by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and another donated by the United Arab Emirates have landed in Bangladesh with emergency aid for Rohingya refugees. It is unlikely that India or China would open their doors to allow Rohingya Muslim refugees to enter owing to real or perceived security concerns.

On a moral plane, the Indian government can hardly hope to defend its stand given the fact that the Rohingya face an imminent threat to their lives in the wake of the ongoing "ethnic-cleansing" drives in the Rakhine State, Myanmar. The ministry has also asked the state governments to identity such illegal immigrants and initiate deportation process.
