Indeed, parents can elect to receive a text or email that shows the cost of an item and shipping address, while the kid can add a personalized plea to win approval, such as: "I need this new shirt for church".

The new move could be a seen simply as a bid to give teenagers more freedom.

Amazon introduced a convenient way for teens 13 through 17 years old to shop on Amazon with their own login. That option then takes teens to write a short note to send to their parents about the purchase, where they can say "I need these sneakers", or "I ran out of granola bars". They can approve the purchase through text or their account.

To get started, Teens and parents can go to amazon.com/forteens and click on the "Teens Start Here" option.

The teen accounts are a part of Amazon Households, an existing Amazon feature that lets Prime members share accounts and payment methods with other family members. With Prime Music, members receive ad-free access to more than two million songs and thousands of playlists and stations at no additional cost to their membership. Teens can also be assigned pre-set spending limits per order as an alternative to having orders reviewed.

For Amazon, getting teens to shop now could turn them into customers for the rest of their lives, said Brendan Witcher, an e-commerce industry analyst at Forrester. If there's a mistake in ordering, parents will be able to cancel and return any item as long as it meets Amazon's policies.

Their credit card information will be hidden on the teen accounts, as will their purchase and browsing histories.
