Amazon launches first waterproof Kindle

Amazon launches first waterproof Kindle

With Audible built in, you can now listen to audiobooks on the new Kindle Oasis.

"The device itself resembles last year's Oasis, but now has a larger 7" display (at 330ppi), and retains the asymmetry of the previous design. The interface has also received a few upgrades, with new boldness options, font sizes and accessibility features. This is the first waterproof Kindle.

Readers have been requesting a waterproof Kindle for years.

The newest member of the Kindle family is the first to come with water resistance, as we mentioned above.

If you preorder the new Oasis today, you can expect it to arrive around October 31.

The design is very much as laid down by the original Oasis, with a slim body behind the display and a pronounced bulge at one side, housing all the brains and the battery. Amazon reduced the new Oasis's bezel size and moved to a slightly larger frame to fit in the bigger screen. Because it doesn't have a speaker or a headphone jack, though, you have to use Audible through Bluetooth headphones or speakers, which seems a bit kludgy.

The new Amazon Kindle Oasis starts at $249.99 (there's a standard 8GB model and another one with more storage (32GB) for audio books and cellular connectivity that costs $349.99).

The new device also features a 7in display and fast-charging capabilities meaning it can be charged to 100% from zero in less than two hours, the company says. That's right, you have a lot less to worry about at the beach or swimming pool now, and this bad boy withstands full-on immersion in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes, not just the occasional splash. Still, the new model is by far the sturdiest Kindle I've ever held, thanks to its metal case.

The resolution of the e-paper display is the same at 300 ppi, but it has a couple extra LED lights now for a brighter, more even-looking display.

Amazon unveiled its waterproof Kindle Oasis e-reader. I've been a devotee of Amazon's e-readers since the Kindle 2, and I was surprised just how different having a seven-inch screen felt. Instead, you can stream audiobooks to Bluetooth headphones and speakers. Users can choose between an 8GB or 32GB Wi-Fi only model. Barnes & Noble's Nook business is dead, and Kobo has never been able to get real traction in the U.S. (although it's popular in Canada) outside of free-software fans and hardcore Amazon haters.
