Arrest warrants issued for Imran for 'repeatedly failing to appear' before ECP

PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi in his petition submitted on Thursday requested the Supreme Court (SC) not to consider the documents recently submitted by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan in the ongoing disqualification case.

The five-member ECP Bench was headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza heard the case.

However, the PTI has said it will challenge the decision in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

While speaking to media on Thursday, the Pakistan Peoples Party leader remarked that Imran should avoid the embarrassment of being taken to the court by police officials.

Before this also, on September 14th, the election commission had issued a bailable warrant against Imran Khan, however, the same was later suspended on PTI's petition.

They said that the decision to arrest Imran Khan is based on discrimination, adding that the ECP is not a competent authority to issue such warrant and due to its biased attitude it can not hold fair elections either. PTI had submitted an apology in the defence, however, Imran Khan once again fueled the controversy stating that he had not apologised and the apology letter submitted was in the personal capacity of Babar Awan, the chief counsel of PTI.

The ECP further accused him of underestimating the authority of the commission and "bringing it into disrepute and disrespect and to interfere with, obstruct, interrupt and prejudice the process of law and the due course of proceedings, and scandalising the commission".
