Attempted plane bomber sues over civil rights violations

The man known as the underwear bomber for trying to blow up a Detroit-bound plane on Christmas day eight years ago with a bomb hidden in his underclothing has filed a lawsuit alleging his constitutional rights are being violated at a supermax federal prison in Colorado.

The lawsuit alleges that he is being abused by being held in longterm solitary confinement.

In 2012, Abdulmutallab was moved from a MI prison to the Supermax facility in Florence, Colorado, 90 miles south of Denver, which houses some of the country's most notorious criminals, CBS Detroit reported.

The lawsuit alleges that once Abdulmutallab got to ADX in Colorado, he was immediately placed in long-term solitary confinement and placed under special administrative measures (SAMs) that prohibited his communication with most of his family members up until a year ago, when he was allowed to talk to his sister.

It alleged that white supremacist inmates were also permitted to harass him during prayer times.

Justice Department officials were not immediately available for comment.

Abdulmutallab is serving four life prison terms in Florence, Colo., the highest-security prison in the country.

His bomb caused a fire on the Northwest Airlines flight, which had 289 people aboard, as it was approaching Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and he was subdued and restrained by passengers and flight crew.

According to the lawsuit, the USA government put Abdulmutallab under special administrative measures.

In an interview with the New York Times, Abdulmutallab's lawyer Gail Johnson said: Prisoners retain fundamental constitution right to communicate with others and have families relationship free from under interference by the government.

"The SAMs imposed on Mr. Abdulmutallab prohibit him from having any communication whatsoever with more than 7.5 billion people, the vast majority of people on the planet", states the complaint, which was first reported in The Denver Post. The lawsuit claims he's not been able to participate in group prayer, doesn't have regular access to an imam and is not provided with a halal diet.

He also claims the staff repeatedly force fed him using "excessively and unnecessarily painful" methods when, on several occasions, he engaged in a hunger strike to protest.
