Cheeto-In-Chief Trump Threatens To Pull Puerto Rico Relief Efforts

Cheeto-In-Chief Trump Threatens To Pull Puerto Rico Relief Efforts

President Trump suggested again on Thursday that Puerto Rico bore some of the blame for its current crisis following twin hurricanes, and that there were limits to how long he would keep troops and federal emergency workers on the island to help.

Puerto Rico has been reeling since Hurricane Maria struck three weeks ago. Residents struggle to find clean water, hospitals are running short on medicine, and commerce is slow, with many businesses closed.

Trump said earlier Thursday on Twitter that Puerto Rico has a "total lack of accountability" and "electric and all infrastructure was disaster before hurricanes".

Last year, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruled (Puerto Rico v. Franklin) that the territory and its municipalities could not declare bankruptcy unlike states of the union, so a financial austerity plan was imposed under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act of 2016 (PROMESA) which created a board to oversee fiscal restructuring in Puerto Rico. He tweeted: "We can not keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been fantastic (under the most hard circumstances) in P.R. forever!"

Rather than criticizing Trump directly, Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello insisted on "requesting the support that any of our fellow citizens would receive across our Nation".

Others, including House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, and Puerto Rican mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, also pleaded with Trump to not abandon the island, home to 3.4 million USA citizens. Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz - who has been critical of Trump and the federal hurricane-relief effort - said his comments seemed to come from a "hater in chief".

Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pennsylvania, who is a member of the House foreign affairs committee, told CNN's Chris Cuomo Thursday there's only "so much" the United States can do to help Puerto Rico.

Vox reported that conflicting numbers from the US government and the Puerto Rican government have made it hard to estimate exactly how many people died - a figure that could go well into the hundreds.

"We have gone all out for Puerto Rico", Trump said at that meeting with Puerto Rico officials, including Cruz. "FEMA needs to stay until the job is done". But it is Trump's tone toward Puerto Rico that has drawn the most criticism. "Mr. President, fulfill your moral imperative towards the people of Puerto Rico".

"It is shameful that President Trump is threatening to abandon these Americans when they most need the federal government's help", said Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, the second-ranking House Democrat. "The Chairman and the Committee fully stand by them in these efforts, and will continue to be at the ready to provide the victims of these devastating hurricanes with the necessary federal resources both now and in the future".

House Speaker Paul Ryan will lead a bipartisan delegation visiting Puerto Rico on Friday, according to the speaker's office.

"It's not easy when you're used to living in an American way of life, and then somebody tell you that you're going to be without power for six or eight months", said Resident Commissioner Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon, who represents Puerto Rico as a nonvoting member of Congress.

Trump himself made a similar promise, saying in a September 29 speech, "We will not rest, however, until the people of Puerto Rico are safe". We want them to be safe and sound and secure. He added: "These are great people".
