Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: Players Cannot Disrespect Flag

The declaration by the powerful owner of the Dallas Cowboys that he would bench anyone who shows disrespect to the American flag drew a sharp response from the National Football League players' union Monday.

That move came after US President Donald Trump attacked the National Football League over the #TakeAKnee anthem protests which were started previous year by former San Francisco 49ers player Colin Kaepernick.

"Again, I believe our team believes in the approach that we take in regards to the anthem and showing respect for the flag and for the national anthem prior to the game", Garrett said.

The NFL Players Association released a statement Sunday that its members "are union members and part of the labor movement that has woven the fabric of America for generations", adding, "Our men and their families are also conscientious Americans who continue to be forces for good through our communities and some have chose to use their platform to peacefully raise awareness to issues that deserve attention".

But can Jones bench a player for such a reason? "We made our expression. So we're clear", the billionaire said after his team's loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, according to the Dallas Morning News.

During that next media briefing, Lockhart surely will be asked to respond to the latest tweet from President Trump, the new position from Jones that players must stand, and the decision of Vice President Mike Pence to leave the 49ers-Colts game after 23 members of the 49ers roster took a knee during the anthem. "I don't think I'm doing anything wrong", Irving said (via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram). Jones and the rest of the Cowboys stood and returned to their sideline and remained standing for the anthem.

Jones, who donated $1 million to Trump's inaugural fund, took part in what appeared to be an anti-Trump demonstration before a game on September 25 (though the announcer said it was about "unity", and it's become unclear what teams and individuals are trying to convey). Many other players who have since knelt have said the protest is not meant to disrespect the military but to raise awareness for social injustice.

"Trump has made [standing for the anthem] about patriotism", Ross added. "Whenever you're dealing with the flag, you're dealing with something different".

"I don't know about that". During the anthem, the players stood locked arm in arm.
