Deer meat sandwiches return to Arby's locations nationwide

The chain best known for its roast beef first tried out its limited-time-only Venison Sandwich a year ago, testing the unprecedented fast food item in five "hunting-centric" states.

If you remember from last year, Arby's venison sandwiches sold out in minutes, and will likely sell out again quickly this year, Arby's Chief Marketing Officer Jim Taylor says. While initially aimed at fewer than 20 Arby's units in hunting-heavy locations, the brand is bringing the sandwich to more than 3,200 units for $7.

That hunt will end October 21 when Arby's Venison Sandwich returns, this time at every Arby's restaurant in America.

1215 M 89, Plainwell, Mich. Taylor told WHAS it took a year to secure enough meat for the promotion, and he recommends customers get to Arby's early on the 21st if they want to try it.

"If people are interested in trying the sandwich, the only way to guarantee they can get one is to get there when we open or a little before and make sure they are in line, just like folks previous year", Taylor said. According to Arby's Chief Marketing Officer Jim Taylor, the sandwich is "a ideal example of the level of innovation coming from our teams and our commitment to creating experiences that guests can only get at Arby's".

Meanwhile, Arby's is testing an elk meat sandwich at three locations in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. Arby's describes it as "a thick-cut venison steak" that "is marinated in garlic, salt, and pepper and then sous-vide for three hours to juicy, tender perfection".

While both game meat sandwiches are intended for mass appeal (at least the Venison Sandwich, for now), the prioritization of specialty sandwiches signals a move by Arby's to target the consumer base of American hunters, a demographic of 20 million potential customers. And if I or someone else at PhillyVoice are able to snag a Venison Sandwich on October 21 (not guaranteed), you can expect a follow-up review article. He said the elk sandwich, which will be served in states where elk hunting is popular, is similar to the venison sandwich but uses a blackberry port wine sauce.
