Equifax may have been breached again

The company, which gathers data on consumers for credit inquiries, has blamed a combination of human and technical error for the massive breach - not the largest on record but potentially the most damaging because of the sensitive financial information on consumers it holds in its databases.

The latest reports of a hack also come on the heels of the Equifax signing a multi-million dollar deal with the IRS to assist with taxpayer and personal identity verification services.

Equifax said that, out of an abundance of caution, the Atlanta company has taken the affected page offline, and it's looking into the matter.

Malware-infested links are a common form of online attack, yet they are rarely found on the websites of companies like Equifax.

For these Canadian consumers, Equifax says the information that may have been accessed includes name, address, social insurance number and, in "limited cases" credit card numbers.

"Despite early media reports, Equifax can confirm that its systems were not compromised", Marisa Salcines, a spokeswoman for the company, said in a statement.

The breach was first noticed by Randy Abrams, an independent security analyst that had been visiting the site to flag fraudulent activity on his credit report.

The cyberattack occurred through a vulnerability in an open-source application framework it uses called Apache Struts. (Much less on web pages specifically designated to help the victims of previous hacks.) Most companies whose primary goal is to collect and secure highly sensitive (and incredibly lucrative) data invest in, you know, basic security measures.
