Facebook to Hire 1000 More Employees to Review Ads

Facebook to Hire 1000 More Employees to Review Ads

The social network recently said that it would share details of these ads with Congress, but would not be making them public.

Fewer than half of the ads - which ran between 2015 and 2017 - were seen before the election, with 56 percent of them seen after the election.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York State would require all political ads on social media platforms such as Facebook to contain the name of the individual or group that paid for it under newly proposed legislation.

Mark Warner, the U.S. Senator, this week claimed that he was saddened by Facebook for failing to give the newest data at the time of a briefing with staff of the Senate Intelligence Committee last week.

The ads have also been shared with special counsel Robert Mueller, who is probing whether the Trump campaign assisted Russian Federation.

"Reviewing ads means assessing not just the content of an ad, but the context in which it was bought and the intended audience - so we're changing our ads review system to pay more attention to these signals", the company said.

Facebook vice president of communications Elliot Schrage on Monday posted answers to "hard questions" prompted by the Russian Federation ads.

Entering that hearing, Facebook has revealed that 470 accounts with connections to the Kremlin purchased about 3,000 ads, some of which sought to stoke political discord around controversial issues like race, religion and gun control.

Facebook also planned to ramp up investment in machine learning to identify and take down ads violating the social network's policies.

In a bid to strengthen their manual review process, the company is hiring 1,000 people to join their global ads review team. Facebook, the largest social network of the world, claimed last week that an operation probably located in Russian Federation had positioned millions of US ads with polarizing opinions on subjects such as race, immigration, and gay rights on the website during a 2-year time frame through May 2017. Facebook is also tightening its policies to prevent ads promoting "more subtle expressions of violence", which might include some of the ads stoking social tensions.

Twitter has said it found postings linked to the same Facebook accounts, and the House and Senate intelligence panels have asked both companies, along with Google, to testify publicly in the coming weeks.

None of the companies have said whether they will accept the invitations.

Facebook last month agreed to hand over information about the ads from the Internet Research Agency to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of the 2016 election. Several lawmakers - including Virginia Sen.
