Found the missing half of the Universe

Scientists have discovered the location of the universe's missing matter - the half of ordinary matter that could not be previously observed, but which scientists knew to exist. To solve this challenge, both teams incorporated the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, which occurs when enduring light from the Big Bang travels through hot gas. To study with a simulated structure, goes exactly in a way of the dark matter.

Research has now shown that gas filaments between some galaxies contain subatomic particles called baryons.

Researchers from Institute of Space Astrophysics in France and University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom found the missing matter made of particles called baryons, linking galaxies together through filaments of hot, diffuse gas. This breakthrough confirms what scientists have suspected for decades. When this happens, it leaves a trace in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the relic radiation from the earliest universe seen from across space. Since the tendrils of gas between galaxies are so diffuse, the dim blotches they cause are far too slight to be seen directly on Plancks map.

When light left over from the big bang passes through hot gas, it scatters, leaving a boring patch (blue) in the cosmic microwave background.

Using 3-D maps of the universe created by the Sloane Sky Digital Survey, the two teams picked out galaxies that would likely be linked by filaments. They stacked the Planck signals for the areas between the galaxies, making the individually faint strands detectable en masse. Furthermore, they found the matter was far denser than average-in Tanimura's paper it was up to three times denser, while in Graaf's paper it was as much as six.

Both teams, looking at over a million pairs of galaxies, found evidence of gas filaments in the space between galaxies.

"This result establishes the presence of ionised gas in large-scale filaments, and suggests that the missing baryons problem may be resolved via observations of the cosmic web", said the authors of the second study. According to current theories regarding the formation of Earth, only 10 percent baryons were visible and about 90 percent of the baryonic matter seem to be missing from the shinier parts of our cosmos.

'If this factor is included, our findings are very consistent with the other group. "Everybody sort of knows that it has to be there", said Professor Kraft, "but this is the first time that somebody - two different groups, no less - has come up with a definitive detection".
