Justice Department Gives "Sanctuary Cities" Final Warning on Immigrants

Justice Department Gives

The DOJ sent letters to five jurisdictions, including Chicago and Cook County, warning that local officials need to send evidence by October 27 that shows they are cooperating with the Trump administration's demands in terms of increasing cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigrant agents.

The Department is, again, threatening to revoke a federal grant.

The U.S. Department of Justice, in separate letters to Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle penned Wednesday, highlights several active policies created to shield undocumented immigrants from being unduly targeted by law enforcement entities. Big-city mayors including New York's Bill de Blasio and Chicago's Rahm Emanuel have openly defied federal instructions to turn in undocumented immigrants.

The Justice Department has threatened to cut off federal funding to boost law enforcement in cities that do not comply with the Department of Homeland Security's efforts to identify and deport undocumented immigrants.

A letter from the Justice Department released Thursday said officials believe NY is violating a law requiring cooperation on immigration enforcement - one of four cities put on notice they were out of compliance.

"As we have maintained for years, the Department of Justice has confirmed that we are in full compliance with 8 U.S.C. ยง 1373", said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu in a statement released today. In a letter dated Wednesday, Hanson noted that the city's 2016 Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant - commonly known as JAG funding - required Philly to comply with the statute.

The Department of Justice has just launched another salvo against Chicago in its crusade against sanctuary-city cities.

Kenney has been an ardent supporter of Philadelphia's "sanctuary city" policies.

"I commend the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office and the State of CT on their commitment to complying with Section 1373", Sessions said, "I urge all jurisdictions found to be out of compliance in this preliminary review to reconsider their policies that undermine the safety of their residents".

The section Sessions references, Section 1373, is a federal statute barring local and state governments from limiting communication regarding residents' immigration or citizenship status with federal officials. Requiring New Orleans Police to demand information about immigration status, local officials argued, would only lead to immigrants fearing and mistrusting police, rather than cooperating with them.

City leaders have long maintained that fostering a good relationship between the police department and immigrant communities will help keep the city safer.
