Nationals' Gio Gonzalez to start Game 5 vs. Cubs

The Cubs scored three runs in five innings against Gonzalez on home runs by Willson Contreras and Anthony Rizzo, but the Nationals scored five times in the eighth for a 6-3 win.

The Nationals announced their pitching choice on Twitter a little less than six hours before the deciding game is scheduled to begin at Nationals Park on Thursday night. But though the extension would put the dominant Stephen Strasburg on regular rest to pitch the Nats' next game, manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday that he will stick with the more hittable Tanner Roark in Game 4 in part because Strasburg is sick. "It will start with Kyle, and Q's ready to back up like Jonny did tonight".

But later, Nationals officials clarified that Baker misspoke and that Strasburg actually threw his bullpen Monday ahead of Game 3, the Washington Post reported.

Fans who had braved the elements all afternoon started to stream out of the ballpark, some of them miffed that this game even happened at all. In three relief appearances, Quintana registered a pair of walks, allowed just one hit, and struck out three batters in seven innings of work that season. Roark's last outing was out of the bullpen in Washington's regular season finale October 1.

Taylor's grand slam was the first in Nationals/Expos postseason history. Does he wait until the later innings? The Nationals, on paper, have the bullpen advantage in Game 5.
