Nirmala Sitharaman teaches Chinese soldiers to say namaste

A day before Indian Air Force Day, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday visited Nathu La near India-China border, an area where the two countries indulged in an intense gun battle in 1967.

The moment was captured and shared by the defence minister on Twitter.

Long after China and India negotiated a face-saving "disengagement" to the Sikkim border standoff, PLA troops are still causing unease with a heavy presence near the disputed terrain.

Ms. Sitharaman has also informed the Army of her request to Home Minister Rajnath Singh for provisioning of Humanitarian And Disaster Relief (HADR) equipment to allow the Indian Army to use them during natural disasters. This video explaining the meaning of hello to Chinese troops, the Defense Minister later tweeted with his Twitter handle.

"But Sitharaman's traditional "Namastey" greetings to the Chinese soldiers sent another signal to the public that might not erase the first impression, but may at least balance things out", it added.

The defense minister's visit to the border area comes more than a month since Indian and Chinese troops disengaged after almost a 70-day standoff at Dokalam.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who undertook a whirlwind tour of defence bases across the country, today called her visits an "eye-opening experience" and stressed on the integration of the three armed forces.

Sitharaman's interaction also impressed Chinese commentators.

The state run paper also said Indians must overcome the paranoia that suggests that India is strategically thwarted and threatened by Beijing.

She later met Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling at his official residence and sought the state government's intervention in sorting out issues, mostly concerning land, between the Army and the state's forest department.

At the end of August, both countries announced their troops had withdrawn from the Doklam plateau following diplomatic talks. "This is commonly regarded as the attitude of the Narendra Modi government", said a Global Times report.

Meanwhile, reports have said that China is building bunkers on a road in Doklam, just 10 km from the location of the last conflict.
