President Trump expected to nominate Kirstjen Nielsen as Homeland Security secretary

President Donald Trump is expected to nominate White House aide Kirstjen Nielsen as his next secretary of Homeland Security.

At the White House, however, as Kelly's enforcer, Nielsen quickly emerged as a controversial presence.

Nielsen had been Kelly's chief of staff when he was secretary of Homeland Security and followed him to the White House, serving as his principal deputy there.

NBC News noted that Nielsen was a "key player" in Trump's travel ban and restrictions on immigration.

It was not immediately clear when Nielsen's nomination would be announced. People close to her "have counseled her to lighten up and to pay more attention to the perfunctory niceties of a not-so-nice-job", they wrote when she became deputy White House chief of staff. Kelly served as Trump's DHS chief for just over six months before replacing Reince Priebus as chief of staff July 31. Now, with Kelly's urging, President Trump will nominate Nielsen to head DHS, which has been run by acting director Elaine Duke since Kelly's departure.

She also created and managed the office of Legislative Policy and Government Affairs at the Transportation Security Administration.

Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, D-Miss., the ranking member of the Committee on Homeland Security, said in a statement he was pleased the president had made a decision on filling the post "after letting the critical national security position remain vacant as the nation faced multiple major hurricanes and a domestic terrorism attack". Before she worked in the Trump administration, Nielsen founded a risk and security management consulting firm.

Added Frances Townsend, her boss at the White House during the Bush administration: "She is tough as nails, competent and has rightly earned the president's respect".

The plans were first reported by Politico.
