Ram statue proposal: AIMPLB calls it 'illegal, unconstitutional'

The Adityanath government has proposed to build 100 metres Lord Ram's statue on the banks of the Saryu River in Ayodhya.

If it does stand 100m tall, the statue of Lord Ram will be double the size of the Statue of Liberty (45m from foot to tip of the torch).

A proposal to build the statue was presented to Governor Ram Naik as part of the state tourism department's initiatives to promote religious tourism in the state.

The communique stated that the statue will be build at Saryughat after clearance from the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The Express reported that the slideshow made at the presentation put the height of the statue at a 100 metres but that "some officials said that wasn't final".

Awasthi made an elaborate presentation before governor Ram Naik on Monday about the details of the integrated tourism development programme that will cost approximately Rs 195.89 crore and the grand Diwali celebrations in Ayodhya this year.

The installation of the Lord Rama statue is just one of the several steps the UP government is planning to take to promote tourism in Ayodhya, the birth place of Lord Rama.

"On Diwali, a grand programme will be held in Ayodhya in which sadhu-saints will also participate". On October 18, 1.71 lakh diyas or oil lamps would be lit at the Ram ki Paidi in Ayodhya, while an Ayodhya Heritage walk, a grand Shobha Yatra showing the entry of Lord Ram to Ayodhya, and his Raj Abhishek ceremony would be showcased, Mr. Awasthi said.

He said the Centre has sanctioned around Rs 133 crore for making it a major tourism hub. Governor Ram Naik, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Tourism Minister Alphons Joseph Kannanthanam and Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma will be present on the occasion. The riots also helped the BJP gain national prominence. Artists from Indonesia and Thailand will also stage Ramlila, the popular drama that enacts the Hindu deity's battle to kill the 10-headed demon king to rescue his wife Sita. The plan to erect the Ram statue appears to be part of this larger design.
