Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary offers pilots a pay rise

He further wrote in the letter that the airline has decided not to cancel pilot's leave as this was "not the right thing to do" and urged the pilots to stay on with the group: "If you have or are considering joining one of these less financially secure/or Brexit challenged airlines, I urge you to stay with Ryanair for a brighter better future for you and your family".

However, some pilots have not been persuaded by the offer of improved conditions from a chief executive who previously accused them of being "full of their own self-importance".

Since the cancellation debacle erupted, several former Ryanair pilots have written articles in British newspapers, describing how the Irish airline insists that most of its pilots are self-employed rather than staff, doesn't permit contract negotiations, and often imposes exhausting work schedules.

Under a section entitled "Learning from this mistake", Mr O'Leary promises "significant changes to, and investment in, our rostering and pilot career development" over the next six months. "We will not, and can not be forced to, deal with third-party pilot unions", he said in the letter.

The Dublin-based airline has "shown a lack of professionalism", Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Kris Peeters, who handles the consumer affairs portfolio, said in a statement.

The Irish budget carrier's crisis over the cancellation of thousands of flights started in the middle of September due to a shortage of cockpit crew following the rota changes, brought about to comply with new aviation rules.

The Guardian reports that HMRC are investigating Ryanair pilots over the company's tax structure and use of Irish limited companies to employ UK-based pilots in order to avoid paying sick pay and other benefits.

At the end of September announced that the winter will cancel another 18 thousand flights. These moves affect more than 700,000 passengers.

Ryanair says 98% of customers hit by flight cancellations in September and October have been refunded or offered alternative transport.

While Ryanair does not recognize trade unions, pilots have launched web and social media forums in recent months to air their grievances.
