Trump threatens network's license after report he wanted to expand nuclear arsenal

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis responded Wednesday to an NBC report that President Trump wanted to increase the USA nuclear arsenal tenfold.

Indeed, Trump's threat seems rather hard to carry out given the Federal Communications Commission does not directly license networks.

President Donald Trump has threatened to challenge the broadcast licences of NBC and other networks.

"The founders of our nation set as a cornerstone of our democracy the First Amendment, forever enshrining and protecting freedom of the press", NAB president Gordon Smith said.

The tweet was one in a series from Trump in which he criticized the network for a story it published Wednesday stating he wanted to increase the USA nuclear arsenal by almost tenfold.

Both Bennet and DeGette are Democrats.

NBC reported that Trump's reaction over the nuclear stockpile came after senior advisers showed him information charting its steady decline in numbers since the 1960s during the meeting at the Pentagon in July.

Mr. Trump said that NBC News' reporting is "Pure fiction, made up to demean" and compared it to CNN, which he has previously also criticized and labeled as "fake news". Instead, licenses are issued to local stations. "Before we can renew a station's license, we must first determine whether, during the preceding license term, the licensee has served the public interest; has not committed any serious violations of the Communications Act or the FCC's rules; and has not committed other violations which, taken together, would constitute a pattern of abuse", the document says.

The NBC story said Trump made the remarks about the arsenal at a meeting with his national security advisers on July 20.

US President Donald J. Trump (R) shakes hands with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during a meeting in the Oval Office. But his latest threat of using the power of the federal government to go after media companies represents a dramatic escalation in his ongoing war against the press.

Markey asked Pai to "publicly refuse to challenge the license of any broadcaster because the president dislikes its coverage".
