Walmart touts online sales growth amid Amazon ecommerce battle

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc is engaged in the operation of retail, wholesale and other units in various formats around the world. That compares with opening 230 new USA stores during fiscal 2016.

In the past 5 years, the stock showed growth of -3.7% per annum. The stock's price to sales ratio for trailing twelve months is 0.55 and price to book ratio for the most recent quarter is 1.28, whereas price to cash per share for the most recent quarter are 4.16. Bragg Financial Advisors Inc increased its stake in shares of Wal-Mart Stores by 4.6% in the first quarter.

The retailer is armoring up online to take on Amazon.com and more traditional rivals, like Target. The company has also been on a shopping spree, snapping up smaller e-commerce players like ModCloth, Moosejaw, and Bonobos.

Walmart is also introducing a "keep it" feature for certain goods. But it has an eye on expanding on groceries online, an underserved market.

Walmart is shifting the battleground in e-commerce by utilising its extensive range of physical outlets to address a particular pain point of online buying - returns. The stock now has Monthly Volatility of 1.22% and Weekly Volatility of 1.33%. It's also rolled out curbside pickup of online grocery orders in about 1,000 of its US stores, putting it way ahead of rival Target, which only offers the service for nonperishable items in its hometown of Minneapolis.

The company went live with voice-activated shopping with Google in answer to Amazon's Alexa-powered Echo devices.

Walmart is now focusing its attention on returns, with the introduction of Mobile Express Returns - an innovative, industry-first experience that combines Walmart's more than 4,700 locations with the Walmart app to make returning an item fast, easy - and maybe even a little enjoyable.

To get to everyday low prices, you have to have everyday low costs. Second, complete the process by dropping the product at the store's Mobile Express Lane and scanning QR code for the refund. The company said it will be looking to streamline the process for online purchases from third-party sellers as well. Returns right now take about four times that, not including any wait in line.

"We've invested a lot of time and energy in that technology to make sure that we're offering that capability to our customers who aren't being abusive", Eckert said.

It is terribly easy to buy things online these days.

Besides, Amazon has also started the same program of reruns at Whole Foods stores across the US, after acquiring the grocery chain in August. Each returned item can either be returned for a refund or exchanged.

Sometimes, brick-and-mortar retail can still flex its muscles. Returning those items for one reason or another, not so much. Meanwhile, the big-box retailer expects USA e-commerce sales to grow by 40%. It opened 40 new supercenters this year, down from 60 supercenter openings the last fiscal year.
