Apple iPhone X Face ID 'Is Tricked' By 3D Printed Mask

Apple iPhone X Face ID 'Is Tricked' By 3D Printed Mask

But Bkav has demoed the first successful one, falsifying Apple's claim that a mask can't be used to spoof Face ID. Facial recognition has shown its pitfalls in the past, with hackers tricking security by putting a photo over the camera.

Bkav did say that attacks would likely be executed on high-profile targets: "FBI, CIA, country leaders, leaders of major corporations, etc. are the ones that need to know about the issue, because their devices are worth illegal unlock attempts", it said. At a presentation announcing iPhone X's facial recognition capabilities on September 12, almost two months before its November 3 release, Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller said engineering teams developed artificial intelligence to help the product distinguish between real owners and masks.

According to details posted on Bkav's website: The mask is crafted by combining 3D printing with makeup and 2D images. It's not impossible, but that's an impressive amount of hurdles to jump in a short amount of time without using a password, as BKAV claimed.

The researchers at Bkav aren't the only ones who've managed to fool Face ID.

A cybersecurity firm have apparently successfully tricked Face ID into unlocking with a specially made mask, imitating a real person's face.

The security experts said they were able to bypass the system because they had understood how Apple's artificial intelligence worked.

When Apple announced it was getting rid of Touch ID for facial recognition, the company said it was a more secure option with only a one in 1,000,000 chance of being hacked.

Seems like its been a bad few days for Apple as users some iPhone X users started reporting problems with the display with a green line appearing on the edge of the screen. They then put 2D printouts of the user's eyes, upper cheekbones and lips over the mask and added a silicone nose for realism.

"Time and effort were involved in creating the mask that fooled the Face ID recognition software", says Paul Norris, senior systems engineer at Tripwire. "If convenience is more important, Face ID may be your choice". And the mask isn't exactly a work of art-Bkav, which has a history of breaking through facial recognition security, just Frankensteined parts together until the phone unlocked. Bkav explains the method requires detailed measurements or a scan of the user's face, making it too advanced for your average hacker to take advantage of.

However, it does raise security concerns given that the mask reportedly cost about $150 (£114) to create. Users can also remotely disable Face ID if they lose their iPhone.
