Blizzard is making Starcraft 2 free-to-play

There's never been a better time to jump into StarCraft II, now free-to-play. Unlocking play in Ranked Mode will require you to earn 10 First Wins of the Day in either of the two modes that are already available to you. Be aware however that you need to log in and claim it before December 8.

In addition, players will gain free access to Kerrigan, Raynor, and Artanis Co-Op Commanders completely for free. On November 14, you'll be able to download the Wings of Liberty campaign without paying a cent, getting access to both single- and multiplayer for free. Often criticized for its lack of custom games and steep price-tag, the decision to make the game free-to-play after almost seven years seems to indicate that Blizzard may have taken some of this criticism to heart. Blizzard has done a fantastic job of keeping StarCraft 2 current between paid expansions, free updates, and community events.

Playing multiplayer matches in their various incarnations will allow you to unlock the rest of the multiplayer ladders beyond that, so the more you play, the more you'll be able to play.

Players who wish to experience later chapters in the StarCraft II story can purchase the additional single-player campaigns, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void (£12.99 each), as well as Nova Covert Ops (£11.99), individually or together in the Campaign Collection (£34.99) through the online Blizzard Shop. In addition, Blizzard announced a new pair of Co-Op Commanders - Mira Han and Matt Horner.

Those that have already purchased any of the three campaigns as of October 31, will receive a "small thank-you in the form of an exclusive Ghost skin as well as three new portraits" from Blizzard.
