Country marks Sardar Patels birth anniversary with Run for

October 31, the Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is being observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) to maintain the unity and integrity all over the country. "But the youth of India respects him and his contribution towards the building of our nation", The Prime Minister said. Sardar Patel, who is also known as a symbol of Unity had successfully integrated the newly independent nation.

A press statement issued by the India Post said, "We have prepared three maxim cards on Sardar Vallabhai Patel - one at his birthplace, Nadiad; one at the place where he lived, is Karamsad; and one from where Patel's memorial is located, Shahibaug". Speaking at a tribute for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the vice president also took the opportunity to speak out against dynastic politics, calling it "nasty for democracy".

"There have been attempts to run down Sardar Patel, to ensure that his contribution is forgotten".

The 1.5-km run here came to an end near the India Gate C-Hexagon-Shah Jahan Road radial.

Paying rich tributes to Sardar Patel, Modi said: "The British government wished that India was disintegrated into smaller states".

Before flagging off the "Run for Unity", PM Modi paid tribute to Sardar Patel on his 142nd birth anniversary saying his momentous service to country can never be forgotten. Sardar Patel, the Iron Man of India, was the instrumental in bringing India together, despite all the differences.

"India's progress in various fields and its march as one of the major economies should not be allowed to be obstructed by anybody and every Indian should strive to uphold and strengthen country's unity and integrity", he said.

The event witnessed several union ministers, senior officials and others also.

Referring to the high moral standards followed by the late Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Mr Naidu said he never allowed his son to remain in Delhi while he was part of the government.
