Tim Southee will miss New Zealand's first Test against West Indies as he awaits the birth of his second child.

New Zealand are returning to the Test arena after an eight-month break while the battle-hardened West Indies are coming off a 2-1 series loss to England, including a dramatic victory at Headingley, and a 1-0 win over Zimbabwe.

In the only other change, Tom Blundell makes his debut as wicketkeeper for the injured BJ Watling.

West Indies haven't won a Test in New Zealand since February 1995 when they secured a mammoth innings win at this venue.

Central Districts batsman George Worker has replaced Tim Southee in the Black Caps squad for the first test against the West Indies in Wellington.

"I think the guys now are more confident in themselves and realise we can beat top teams and top individual players", Roach pointed out.

Friday's match at the Basin Reserve in Wellingtonis the first of two Tests against the West Indies, which will be followed by three ODI matches.
