Indonesia's Mount Agung volcano erupts

Bali's Mount Agung has begun erupting following months of warnings from the nation's disaster mitigation agency.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency says the minor eruption saw clouds of smoke rise about 700 metres into the air.

"Do not panic. Stay away from areas within a 6-5/5 kilometer radius of the volcano", he said on his Twitter account. "Residents should remain calm and follow the PVMBG's recommendations", it said.

The volcano sent smoke as high as 800 metres above its summit, as it stirred to life again after more than 140,000 people fled homes around the crater last month.

"It is expected that all communities living around Mount Agung and on the island of Bali (should) immediately prepare a mask to cover the nose and mouth, and (have) eye protection as an effort to anticipate the potential danger of volcanic ash", a government statement said.

An eruption in 1963 killed 1,549 people.

On Oct 29, the centre lowered the volcano's alert level by one notch after it had previously appeared to be on the brink of eruption.

Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport remains open.

All airlines said on Wednesday morning flights in and out of Bali are operating as scheduled, but Jetstar Airways claims that could change if the smoke continues to billow.

According to official estimates, the holiday island of Bali has lost at least $US110m in tourism and productivity while locals were moved to shelters. The alert level was not raised after Tuesday's eruption, despite the possibility of an even larger eruption.

Indonesia is home to around 130 volcanoes due to its position on the "Ring of Fire", a belt of tectonic plate boundaries circling the Pacific Ocean where frequent seismic activity occurs In 2010 Mount Merapi - considered one of the most active and risky volcanoes in the world - erupted, killing some more than 300 people and forcing 280,000 people to flee.
