J&K: 1 soldier, terroist killed in Kulgam encounter

An Army jawan and a militant were today killed in an encounter in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir even as security forces were engaged in a counter insurgency operation in Pulwama district.

The police, Central Reserve Police Force and Army officials launched a combing and search operation in Nowbug Kund area of Kulgam early on Tuesday after they received information about the presence of Hizbul Mujahideen militants there, said a police official.

These encounters are taking place after security forces conducted cordon and search operations in the state, reports CNN-News18. The operation has not been called off yet, Pani said. "He was a militant of Hizbul Mujahideen", a police officer said here. The firing was going on when last reports came in, the spokesman said.

A police official said Bhat was from the volatile Palhalan area.

Authorities have suspended internet service in Baramulla district fearing it would mobilize crowds.

An overnight cordon-and-search-operation (CASO) launched by government forces in Lam forests of Tral in south Kashmir's Pulwama district ended here on Tuesday after over twenty-hours. "The security personnel fired several rounds in the air during the search".

Security forces also retaliated, ensuing an encounter, sources said, adding that all exit points were sealed.

The two militants had attacked a police party on Monday evening, according to The Hindu.
